Causes of Food Poisoning on Holiday
There are many causes of food poisoning on holiday. In some cases, the illness may be caused by the consumption of contaminated food in the hotel. There are several circumstances where food becomes contaminated, some of these include;
- Food not being cooked thoroughly.
- Food served lukewarm, or food that has not been kept at a constant temperature.
- Food that has been re-heated, or has been left standing for too long.
- Hot food being added to cold food.
- Food that has been prepared on unclean surfaces.
- Food that has been contaminated by flies, insects, or birds.
- Food that has not been handled correctly or has been infected by food handlers.
- Food such as salads and fruit that has been “washed” in unsafe tap water.
- Ice served in drinks made from unsafe tap water.
- Unsafe tap water being served to guests.
Causes of holiday sickness are not just confined to the restaurant or buffet. Additionally, infections can be picked up from areas around the hotel such as;
- Poorly maintained swimming pools and pool area.
- Inadequate levels of chlorine in the swimming pool.
- Poor personal hygiene of fellow guests in the swimming pool.
- Poorly maintained air conditioning throughout the hotel or resort.
- Less than expected levels of cleanliness in public bathrooms and heavily used areas of the hotel.
Types of Holiday Illnesses
If you’ve suffered from any one of the situations mentioned above, there is a chance you may have contacted one of the following illnesses.
Salmonella – this is often found in raw poultry.
Campylobacter – this is a common cause of food related illnesses. It spreads very easily from uncooked to cooked foods and requires only a few bacteria to cause illness.
E.coli – most strains of E Coli are completely harmless to the body but there are strains that
are very dangerous, E Coli o157 which can be found in water supplies.
Typhoid – this is transmitted through the ingestion of contaminated food or water and contaminated feces.
Cyclospora – usually caused by consuming food or water contaminated with the parasite, Cyclospora cayetanensis.
Cryptosporidium – a parasite commonly known as “Crypto.” Protected by an outer shell, this parasite is particularly resistant to chlorine disinfectant, and is commonly spread through consumption of unclean water.
Bacteria such as campylobacter, E. coli and salmonella are the most common causes of holiday sickness.
Large groups of hotel guests often get ill at the same time because they’ve all eaten from the same buffet, particularly on All Inclusive holidays.
A recent investigation showed that holiday sickness was more common in certain parts of the world. An analysis of all our holiday illness compensation claims showed that over a quarter of claims came from holidaymakers returning from Egypt, with Mexico, Dominican Republic, Canary Islands and Morocco also being a common source of outbreaks.
